The Declutter Diaries is a series of posts I did for a former blog as a glimpse inside a real decluttering project [with occasional editorial comments from my present self].  You can start with Day One here.

This week I will continue to work on sorting and actually getting rid of the filled boxes from last week.  It’s really too hot to do anything in the attic, so I am bringing the boxes down one by one to either donate or sort for selling.  [This is a good strategy when you are working in a room that is not ideal to work in.  Think attic, basement, garage, or just a room that is too full and has no workspace.  Take the boxes out one by one to an area where you can work.]

Today my goal was to get some of my “donate” boxes out of the house.  I delivered 1 bag of clothes and 1 bag of books to some bins.  It feels good to see these things go.  [Yes, it does.  Just this last week I was able to get 3 boxes of dishes and kitchen items out of my house by giving them to someone who had just moved here from another country.]

Work to get your donations out of the house as soon as possible.

The rest of my boxes require more effort to get rid of since I will be selling things (probably Craigslist or Ebay) or giving items to individual people.  I started sorting out some business things that I plan to sell.  Also, I contacted people to see if they have an interest in particular items.  My husband got an assignment to get a box of his books ready to sell.  (I love delegating things!)

[Another key idea when you are decluttering is to delegate certain areas to others.  You are not asking them to do all the work, but if the items belong to them, they really do need to make the decisions about what goes and what stays.]

Have any actual bags/boxes of stuff left your house yet?  It’s not over ‘til the bag/box goes!
