Excavating Piles A while back I excavated one of my (many) piles to get a sense of exactly what ends up in my piles and why I was making piles. From a single pile that had been sitting on my bedroom floor for several months, there were approximately 70 (!) items: sticky notes magazines paint chips for a project mail old math manipulatives a spare button packet receipts recipes file folders notes and (strangely) old lenses from my glasses I actually listed … [Read more...] about 5 Reasons You Pile Things and How You Can Stop

Besides the mini-makeover mentioned in a previous post, I have been scouring through the cupboards trying to rethink how I use my kitchen. I started doing some of this thinking a few years ago, but it never hurts to revisit your household systems. Here is how I organized my small kitchen to maximize storage. Under the Sink Basically, there was too much stuff in here. I needed to clean out unused items like broken spray … [Read more...] about How to Organize a Small Kitchen for Maximum Storage

Recently I started noticing how junky my kitchen was. Piles grow and sit on the counter until I become so used to seeing them, they just blend into the background. Some stuff has been around for years and has become worn out and sad looking. The drawer I’m used to rummaging around in has all kinds of junk I never use. How about the empty wall in the corner that I never got around to decorating? Yup, total blindness to what it really looks like. Time to eliminate the piles, worn out … [Read more...] about Easy Mini Kitchen Makeover

What exactly is organization? We talk a lot about “getting organized,” but what does that really mean?  When I think of “being organized,” visions of sparse, minimalist homes dance in my head.  Vast, clutter-free horizontal surfaces abound, not a single pile of paper is to be found anywhere, and all items are arranged in beautiful, color-coded containers. My mother is one of those people who is just naturally neat. Even my two brothers are neat, organized people. Our house was always tidy and clean, with one glaring exception: my bedroom. Somehow I missed out on the “neat gene.” My room was always chaotic and overstuffed. Oh, I had my neatness attacks and cleaned up every so often, but it wasn’t sustainable. Before long my room would devolve into chaos again. The piles moved around; they were fruitful and multiplied When I grew up, I didn’t … [Read more...] about In The Beginning, There Were Piles
