Bookcase under a stairway

If you’re like me, you’ve probably thought, “I’d love to put everything in its place, if only it had a place!”  How can you go about finding a place for everything, especially if you live in a storage-challenged house? Landing Box First, let’s think about an immediate solution for those hot-spots where stuff piles up.  I'm talking about counters, tables, and other horizontal surfaces.  You need a landing box to collect that stuff. A landing box is like an inbox, but big enough to hold the … [Read more...] about How to Find More Storage Space in a Small House

Two minutes or less

In a previous post about demolishing piles, I ended at the point of me starting to do items in my “Take Action” box that take two minutes or less.  Why that length of time?  David Allen says in his book Getting Things Done, “The rationale for the two-minute rule is that that’s more or less the point where it starts taking longer to store and track an item than to deal with it the first time it’s in your hands—in other words, it’s the efficiency cutoff.”  Get it? The efficiency cutoff means that … [Read more...] about Two Minutes: A List of Things You Can Do Around the House

How to avoid critical inbox mistakes

Taming the Inbox This past weekend I started whittling away at my inbox.  I’m not sure what other people use their inbox for, but for me, it is a catchall.  Everything goes in here: bills, articles, flyers, photos, receipts, catalogs, artwork, school papers, broken items, extra buttons or screws, etc.  In fact, there is so much stuff in here that I don’t have an inbox, I have (several) in-piles that live in big boxes. Typically, when I attempt to go through my inbox, I spend most of the time … [Read more...] about How to Avoid These Critical Inbox Mistakes

Organization does not equal tidiness

What exactly is organization? We talk a lot about “getting organized,” but what does that really mean?  When I think of “being organized,” visions of sparse, minimalist homes dance in my head.  Vast, clutter-free horizontal surfaces abound, not a single pile of paper is to be found anywhere, and all items are arranged in beautiful, color-coded containers. Looking at Pinterest only adds fuel to this fantasy.  Given what I see there, the beautifully organized people live in mostly-white homes … [Read more...] about Organization does not equal tidiness

Christmas tree decoration

Today I took down the Christmas decorations.  With the help of the kids, this actually went pretty fast.  The main reason for this is that I limit the amount of decorations that we have.  Let’s face it: I’ve got a small house and don’t have much room for knick-knacks.  We put up a tree, a wreath on the door, stockings, a nativity scene, and dining table decor.  There are just a few other items that go on shelves and the kids each have something special that they put in … [Read more...] about Post Christmas Cleanup

Paper pile and inbox organization

My mother is one of those people who is just naturally neat. Even my two brothers are neat, organized people. Our house was always tidy and clean, with one glaring exception: my bedroom. Somehow I missed out on the “neat gene.” My room was always chaotic and overstuffed. Oh, I had my neatness attacks and cleaned up every so often, but it wasn’t sustainable. Before long my room would devolve into chaos again. The piles moved around; they were fruitful and multiplied When I grew up, I didn’t … [Read more...] about In The Beginning, There Were Piles
